It is with great sadness that I bring you news of the passing of Thundersley Rovers Sports Club's former Club Secretary, Nigel Purkis, who died last week.

Nigel was involved with the Club for more than 20 years, having first joined Rovers when taking over the U9s team that had been formed in 1991. Uniquely perhaps, he continued to run that same team until 2012, by which time most of his players had started families of their own.

A fantastic coach who was well respected throughout local football, Nigel combined this with his role of Club Secretary for many years and, when we opted to relaunch the junior Academy in 2012, his experience, knowledge, contacts and advice proved vital.

Additionally, he was also heavily involved with the Sceptre League, for whom he was a Divisional Officer for many years.

Despite retiring from Club duties more recently, Nigel's influence continues to be felt strongly around Thundersley Rovers - be that in the Committee, where both my wife, Claire (Club Secretary) and I benefited from his considered (and patient) guidance, or even at Rovers' Thundersley Common Clubhouse, the restoration of which he largely oversaw in 2012.

On a personal level, and away from sporting pursuits, Nigel was a close and loyal friend to my family for many years. Above all he was a devoted husband to Janet, and a man who loved his family.

In July of last year, Nigel and Janet were our special guests at TRSC's 2017 Academy Presentation Evening, staged at Runnymede Hall (see above, Nigel on stage with wife Janet).

In retrospect, it seems fitting that his final appearance at a Rovers event saw Nigel receive a rapturous round of applause from an appreciative floor. The thoughts of everyone at TRSC are with Jan and their sons at this difficult time; Nigel will be greatly missed by us all.
